Indian students create solar panel roads prototype

A team of students from IIT Roorkee has developed a prototype for solar-integrated road panels that generate electricity while vehicles drive overhead. The panels are made of tempered glass and photovoltaic cells, with heat-dissipation technology to maintain surface temperature. The prototype stretch on campus powers street lights, EV chargers, and campus Wi-Fi. The team is working on scaling it for highways and rural roads. If successful, it could transform road infrastructure and energy utilization, with deployment targeted in 2027 pilot regions.
